Widows Jewelry
Beaded Necklaces and Bracelets
Many of the women in the Dorcas Widows Ministry make beautiful beaded necklaces, bracelets and earrings to sell in the market in Kampala. To make the beads the women:
- Buy or find recycled paper,
- cut the paper into long triangular strips,
- roll the strips into beads on a needle (see picture to the right),
- cover them with rubber cement,
- string the beads together and attach plastic clasps.
- When the jewelry is ready, they lacquer each piece in their hands and let the necklaces and bracelets dry.
Each necklace takes about a half a day to make from start to finish. The women sell their handicrafts in the markets around Kampala but the widows report that there is very little demand unless foreigners come to visit.
